The big difference is usually channels, crafting, and disk drives. Refined storage has no channels, crafting is a simple block you put on machines/chests and put recipes in, and disk drives have unlimited types. I don't know if AE2 channels are more performant than the other options, but think they are at a minimum an interesting game play ... It is a little OP, being able to access your storage from anywhere (even across dimensions) for very little RF, but the inventory management mini-game lost its appeal for me long ago. Just a note, while the remote can be bound to a Refined Storage Grid block without a problem, it was a little finicky with AE2's terminals when I added it to E2E. I've been figuring out how to automate the energizing orb from Powah with AE2. It's kinda easy with Refined Storage as the crafter has a "insert next batch on pulse" option. AE2's blocking mode checks if the target inventory is empty before pushing the next batch of items.
