The M14 is the very reason for the ridiculous "once a machine gun, always a machine gun" nonsense. However, taking the heel and cutting off the lug and welding it to a current made semi-auto receiver is NOT illegal, nor is it considered a machine gun. This is how JRA was able to do it.

That being said, I have a regular JRA M14 and I wouldn't trade it for one of the welded ones. I think the real M14 heal is cool for a collector, but as a shooter I like the solid, one piece forging of my receiver. I have no data on the welded M14 receivers, so they may prove to be just as reliable as mine. Are the holes where the weld is or part of the Winchester heel?
