This Model 39-A will still have the older, Ballard style rifling instead of the newer, patented Micro-Groove rifling Marlin started using in 1954.Can't seem to find an explanation to match the serial number with a date of manufacture that fits my gun. I have a 39A that i got from my father-in law. I was trying to find out the manufacture date, but the first character of the serial number is odd. (see attached image). It looks like it could be a D or a P, but it is missing part of the letter. It does not look like the missing part has worn off, it looks like it was never there.I challenge anyone to produce a 39a, with the brass insert grip cap, that has a serial number prefix other than an "H". Also the white buttplate spacer wasn't added until 1951 either. There was an insert, in the 1952 catalog, dated 3/52 that said the program was stopped. I found my scan of it.
