It was pretty helpful to know exactly what the people in vet school were going through and to see firsthand what was needed that year and personal interview experiences. they also did field trips to the aquarium and zoo.

I've perused many an animal internship and can't think of one off the top of my head that is paid. A few will provide at least a small stipend for food, or allow on-site housing, but I'd say those are in the minority.
