So if you are a midsize firm with 300 Revit users daily then the speed/clunkiness is going to be based on how much ram is available to allocate to each user. We detailed in Autocad and Modeled in Revit. We would take the ACAD dwg and import them in to Revit. Revit sections just aren't great when working in any scale smaller than 3/4" imo. The model just doesn't have the detail. We did use Revit to cut sections but would often have to manually draw additional details.

With my experience of converting cad models to 3d models for my job, the best method is to use the large model to model it again in max/blender/maya with less polygons and better UV's with a texture to show the detail that was in the large model.
