Season 2 of the 90s cartoon was awesome for exactly this reason. They didn't jump into the big classic stories yet, they decided to do individual character episodes to go into their pasts and why they left to join the X-men. I agree. Not having to waste time with origin stories gives far more storytelling freedom.
