If you do heme/onc at a larger academic center it seems like it's expected of you to devote quite a large portion of time to research.

I have been 100% sold on heme/onc since entering residency, and am 85% sold on pursing private practice, despite a hefty research resume. For a standard Hem/Onc fellowship, you need 18 mos of clinical work and 18 mos of "research". Single board programs are 12+12 but some will tack on a 3rd year to "help you with your research" (AKA, get cheap labor out of you). Some programs are 2 full clinical years + 12 mos of research.
