Shilen barrel review.

May 10, 2016. #13. Never used a Criterion, but I have 2 Shilens currently and one I recently took off a 6.5-06. IMO, Shilen are the most overrated barrel makers on the market right now. All 3 of the barrels I have are not much better to a factory barrel as far as I'm concerned. They also did a poor job lapping them which means they foul pretty bad.The bores of every one of these barrels must air gauge to the uncompromising dimensions listed in the Shilen Rifle Barrels data sheet. Each barrel exterior is polished to a 180-grit finish. The bores of these barrels are supplied lapped, barrels are crowned at customer's specified length and all chambers come already polished. Most have been in 223, but I had him do this barrel in 6 ARC. 20" medium contour, rifle length gas (.875 gas block), fluted and threaded. Turnaround was about 9 months, but worth the wait.I like McGowen barrels and get a new barrel every year for one of a bunch of rifles. Excellent service & product. Shilen makes great quality barrels, but not because the rifling style. The performance comes from good quality blanks with sharp tooling, good quality control, so on, so on. The ratchet rifling is marketing. Maybe it makes a difference, but it's not enough of a difference for a mere mortal like myself to notice.
