I only ever used 1 grapple arm and after I get the jump upgrade I never needed it again. Never saw the usefulness of it except in certain early areas or if you enjoy using the Prawn suit for whatever reason. If you aren't sure, just build an extra arm and keep it in the prawn inventory storage box so you can swap arms when you need to.

The PRAWN Suit is THE most FUN vehicle in the game. You do not need the grappler arm to get a lot of use out of the PRAWN Suit. You can surmount ALMOST any surface hill / slope / cliff / ravine with just the built in jump jets, even though you may have to search around for a bit to find a workable pathway.
