Running a string around each rod helps you align the rods as you lower the crank in. You can tie each string off to hold the rod's position as you lower. Then adjust, lower, adjust, lower. Bottom line; it's a pain to do it that way. The duramax engine has a long history of breaking cranks at that location. This is so much of a common issue that people have created cam shafts with altered firing orders to try to remove the stress from that point on the crank. Plenty of stock trucks have broken cranks like this.It's still uck of the draw. Theres HUNDREDS of broken DURAMAX cranks from guys running aftermarket balancers on engine with cirtually no run time. LML's seem to pop around the 150-200K mile mark, others are a gamble. As to harmonics, these same harmonics are present in engines running ATI balancers, it's just a natural harmonic in the engine.

If you have a scanner pull up the cam and crank sensor/signal and see if you’re getting a reading. If you’ve got a broken crank and you lose those readings, it can cause a no start. actual fuel pressure reads like 5psi while cranking.

After that, start by replacing the injector that is the worst, then check balance rates again. Ideally you would first run a compression test on any cylinders with high positive balance rates.

Once you remove that hub then you can see the cam gear and pin. It might be fine, and your issue is just the hub in front of it. You should be able to pull that off with a puller.

Nov 28, 2014 · I've got 3 LB7/LLY broken cranks here. They all do it, but the LB7/LLY cranks have a little more weight to them so they are preferred if you're building the motor.
