On "shaft driven mechanical oil injection pump" models, the pump and driven shaft should be removed. In their place you should bolt Mercury's "Pump Blockoff Plug", which has a long collar that fits into the bushing (in the far side of the block), retaining it in place. It's essentially a long plastic "dummy" for the driven gear AND the pump base.
