For me, CS 446, machine learning, was far and away the hardest course I've tried to take in my whole life. I haven't taken all classes here, and I haven't taken any 500 level classes, but 446 was about 80% grad students anyway. Workload was about 30 hours a week for the first 2 homeworks, the "easy and introductory/review" assignments.

Definitely take CS374, that class is pretty much a staple of a CS education at UIUC. The 400 level classes are very specific and may end up not being useful to what you actually end up doing in CS. However although you may not see it at the time CS374 will teach to approach problem solving in a universally applicable way.Guaranteed Admission.
