Personally, I carry one 2x2 of canned food (usually canned bacon), one soda, and a stack of chlorine all inside a cooking pot. This allows for one back up food if you get low and still can't find an animal to hunt. Time-wise, the fastest way is to boil in two cooking pots on a fireplace in a house. The best way to cook food is inside a cooking pot. Fill it with water, you boil whatever's inside. Then the water is safe to drink. Otherwise you need fat to cook them, just like with a frying pan. Works the same way in a cooking pot.

If your in game time is set to say 8am when server starts and you have 4 hour restarts, you could use time acceleration 3 which would mean after the 4 hours is up and server restarts the time would be 8pm in game.

It's a Hardcore survival setup so use Stealth and take your time. Zombies and animals are tougher, loot is both vanilla and modded loot but it is limited, you won't find good gear everywhere, you need to spend time and effort to find it.
